Assessment of ultrasonographic and endoscopic changes in dogs with gastrointestinale disorders Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Malancus,R.N.; Malancus,C.M. Tofan.
ABSTRACT The study has been conducted over a period of 4 years, on a total number of 133 dogs, all of those expressing gastrointestinal disorders. Ultrasound and endoscopic examinations were performed in all dogs in order to assess any significant correlations between ultrasonographic and endoscopic findings. The results confirm a significant correlation between the presence of diarrhoea and increased thickness of the large bowel wall, with P<0.5. Another extremely significant correlation we observed is the one between increased thickness of large bowel wall and loss of layering at this level, with P<0.5. Upper GI endoscopy revealed that dilated lacteals in the duodenum are significantly associated with the presence of diarrhoea, P<0.5 and, more...

Gross anatomy and histology of the alimentary system of Characidae (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes) and potential phylogenetic information Neotropical Ichthyology
Alonso,Felipe; Mirande,Juan Marcos; Pandolfi,Matías.
A compared study of the morphology of the alimentary tract and liver of seven selected species corresponding to the main clades of the Characidae family is presented herein. Three new set of characters corresponding to 1) alimentary tract gross anatomy, 2) alimentary tract histology and 3) liver gross anatomy are evaluated as potential sources of data for future phylogenetic studies of the Characidae. Not considerable interspecific variation was observed at the histological level and therefore this source is not considered to be phylogenetically informative at the taxonomic level analyzed. In contrast, liver and alimentary tract gross anatomy presented important interspecific variation while a relatively homogenous intraspecific morphology was observed....

Partial substitution of fishmeal with soybean protein-based diets for dourado Salminus brasiliensis Scientia Agricola
Correa,Roselany de Oliveira; Aguilar,Fredy Armando Aguilar; Cruz,Thaline Maira Pachelli da; Sabioni,Rafael Estevan; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT Cost and environmental restrictions limit the use of fishmeal (FM) in aquafeeds and plant protein (PP) sources. Soybean by-products are important alternative; however, their antinutritional factors may reduce fish growth. This study evaluates the effect of FM substitution for PP (soybean meal and soy protein concentrate) in diets of dourado (Salminus brasiliensis), a promising species for fish farming and empirically considered highly tolerant to PP-based diets. A control diet was formulated to contain 20 % of fishmeal and 61 % of plant protein (SBM) and other five diets with decreasing FM graded levels (16 %, 12 %, 8 %, 4 %, 0 %), which were replaced by soybean protein concentrate (SPC), comprising six treatments and four replicates. Fifteen...

Scanning Electron Microscopy of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Nile Perch (Lates niloticus, Linneaus, 1758) International Journal of Morphology
Namulawa,Victoria Tibenda; Kato,Charcles Drago; Nyatia,Edward; Rutaisire,Justus; Britz,Peter.
The morphology of the gastrointestinal tract of adult Nile perch was described using standard SEM procedures. Investigations revealed the presence of cardiform teeth in the oral cavity, goblet cells and finger print-like microridges on the hard palate and oesophagus lumenal surface. Elaborate patterns and bacterial cells were observed on the stomach lumenal surface and intense foldings in the intestinal region. These observations provide a better understanding of the morphology of the gut in Nile perch and how it is suited for its digestive function.

Search for beneficial bacterial strains for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L.) larviculture OMA
Huys, L.; Dhert, P.; Robles, R.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Swings, J..
The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12...
